WILDERNESS FIRST AID / CPR
Wilderness first aid & CPR is a comprehensive lesson in how to react, respond, and save a life in remote, life-threatening situations. Helping students develop the ability and confidence to provide primary care in bad weather, with non-standard equipment, to cope with emergency response and long term care, and critical decision making skills are first and foremost. This wilderness first aid/cpr program has several applications:

  • Personal Recreation - trip leaders, camp counselors, hunters, hikers, sailors, etc.
  • People who work in developing countries without a conventional EMS system.
  • Remote Occupations - fishing, farming, forestry, mining, etc.
  • Disaster Response - major disasters may overload EMS resources and necessitate long term care.
Wilderness patient care takes universal medical care principles and applies them to specialized working context:
  • Extended patient management - patient transport to a hospital level facility may be delayed, prolonged, or impossible from the patient's location. It becomes necessary to manage the patient in the field for a extended time.

  • Extreme environments - Exposure to environmental forces such as heat, cold or altitude over a prolonged time frame present special problems for the patient and the rescuer(s).

  • Limited equipment - Equipment that is standard in conventional practice is often unavailable in remote conditions. This requires a specialized approach to equipment and the creation of simple, portable, improvised materials.
Duration: 8 - 24 hours, depending upon desired level of instruction.
Maximum Class Size: 16
